The
Tukwila Children's Foundation was created by a group of
local citizens. They wanted to establish a community-based
vehicle that would help the children of Tukwila - help
meet the unmet needs that are facing many of the children
in Tukwila on a day-to-day basis. They chose to form a
community foundation to accomplish these goals. Community
foundations are tax-exempt, not-for-profit, publicly supported
philanthropic institutions made up primarily of permanent
funds endowed by many donors for the long-term benefit
of residents in a specific community.
Our first Annual Meeting, when we officially began, was
in March 2002. At that meeting, the group identified the
main priorities of the Foundation. The result was two
fold:
The Tukwila Children's Foundation provides scholarships
(both academic and extra-curricular) and emergency needs
(funds to the schools, police and fire dept. for the immediate
things that come up while working with children). These
are on a short-term, immediate-results level.
The Tukwila Children's Foundation identified a long-term,
systemic issue that affects children literacy.
All donations to the Tukwila Children's Foundation are
dedicated to helping to meet the unmet needs of Tukwila's
